Presentation Form vector digital data
Abstract This dataset provides an initial version of the generalized physical boundaries of New Mexico State Parks, in polygonal form with limited attributes, compiled using available data from a variety of sources. The boundaries have been digitized from AutoCAD drawings and/or from legal descriptions, supplemented by digital orthophotography cross-checking, and adjusted to the GCDB when possible. The dataset will be refined in the future to include other attributes and provide better accuracy.
Purpose This dataset is intended to provide public users with the approximate location of New Mexico State Park boundaries, for use in statewide or regional studies, and is not intended to legally define said boundaries.
Supplemental Information One type of polygon is provided in this public edition: State Parks, which illustrate outlines of state parks and areas of joint management with other agencies. An internal edition exists which also includes types of "Potential" (which illustrate lands which are being considered for inclusion into a state park) and "Internal" (which illustrates park boundary within a polygon which includes that state park and an area of joint management). Parks boundaries reviewed/vetted by State Parks staff, including Cynthia Lovely, Dave Gatterman, Rob Love, and Rob Vadurro. Initial metadata provided by E. Nestlerode, and modified by Rick Koehler, EMNRD ITO GIS Coordinator

Data Quality Information

Attribute Accuracy Report
Report Attributes in this initial version largely consist of the name of the State Park. The names were compared with the names given by State Parks to judge accuracy. One attribute "County", which provided a county name to be associated with each State Park, was eliminated, as the location of a boundary or Park vis-a-vis any particular county can be ascertained by other means, and for the more important reason that several NM State Parks are located across county boundaries, and hence can not be described by a single county attribute. The park names were edited once at EMNRD to reflect the names used by State Parks to refer to each park; there were differences between the name attribute givien by SLO and those used by State Parks (eg., "Bluewater Creek" is actually "Bluewater Lake", "Sugarite" is actually "Sugarite Canyon", etc.).

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
Report Tested by visual comparison with the original source materials, orthophotos (1 meter RGB from 2005-6 and other years) and legal descriptions.

Vertical Positional Accuracy Report

Logical Consistency Report Line segments making up the inner and outer boundaries of of a polygon tie end-to-end to completely enclose the area. No duplicate features exist. All nodes are represented by a single coordinate pair which indicates the beginning or end of a line segment.
Completeness Report All boundaries for existing New Mexico State Parks, as of January 2009, are depicted in this dataset. The public version of this dataset does not contain potential State Parks or other non-finalized entities. Due to the source data accuracy limitations, there may be portions of existing State Parks not depicted as such in this version, or areas depicted as being within the bounds of State Parks which, in fact, are not. More complete analyses of legal descriptions, supplemented by increased locational accuracies, will likely result in a revised (and more "complete") dataset.

Process Step
Process Description The following process description was provided by Eleanore Nestelrode of the NM SLO: "State parks boundaries were derived using a variety of methods. The majority of boundaries were either direct CAD-to-GIS conversions or digitized from georeferenced CAD import; a few boundaries were digitized from interpretation of legal description. All boundaries were compared with digital orthophotography (ECW files, ca. 2005-2006, downloaded from http://rgis.unm.edu) for logical fit. Vertices were snapped to GCDB PLSS where applicable for consistency."
